AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE: FROM DOCTORS WITH COMPUTERS TO COMPUTERS WITHOUT DOCTORS
Bram van Ginneken
Abstract: It looks like the cost of healthcare will explode in the next decades. In the Western World, there will be a flood of elderly with an ever increasing life expectancy and insatiable demand for high quality care. In the rest of the world, the demand for healthcare is rising even more rapidly, but financial resources and qualified personnel are scarce. Massive automation is the best option we have to address this crisis. It is time to stop focusing on providing computer tools to physicians in the hope that with this support, they will deliver slightly better but even more expensive care. Instead we should aim to completely replace expensive humans as much as possible by much cheaper machines. The unfolding revolution in machine intelligence suggests this is possible. This talk will present a number of recent development in the area of automated diagnostic image analysis
